Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) was a Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist who is best known for his work on developing the modern AC (alternating current) electrical supply system. He was born on July 10, 1856 in Smiljan, in what is now Croatia, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Tesla was a brilliant inventor and had over 300 patents to his name at the time of his death. He made many contributions to the fields of electricity and magnetism, including the Tesla coil, a device used to produce high-voltage, low-current, high-frequency alternating-current electricity, and the Tesla turbine, a bladeless centripetal flow turbine. Tesla was also a proponent of wireless communication and dreamed of creating a global wireless communication system. Despite his many contributions to science and technology, Tesla died penniless and largely unrecognized.
