UN instructs all staff in Afghanistan to stay home after Taliban bans women from working with the organization
The United Nations has instructed all its personnel in Afghanistan to stay away from its offices in the country, after the Taliban banned Afghan women from working with the organization. This new ban affects all female staff, including those working with the UN, as well as those who work for other organizations that the UN partners with for its humanitarian programs.
As a result of the ban, all 3,300 UN national staff have been asked to stay home until the women can return to work. UN officials have strongly denounced the ban, calling it a violation of human rights and a setback for efforts to rebuild and develop Afghanistan. They have also expressed concern about the impact of the ban on the delivery of humanitarian services to the Afghan population, particularly women and children, who are often the most vulnerable in crisis situations.
The UN has also called on the Taliban to reverse its ban and ensure that women are allowed to work for the organization and its partners without fear of reprisals. The Taliban has not yet responded to the UN's request to reverse the ban.
